Why do Employees Leave Their Jobs for Self-Employment? – The Impact of Entrepreneurial Working Conditions in Small Firms

    Get PDF
Based on the finding that entrepreneurs who found new firms tend to work as employees of small rather than large firms prior to start-up, we test how different working conditions, which enhance entrepreneurial learning, affect their decision to become entrepreneurs when moderated by firm size. Based on data of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), we find a significant relationship between entrepreneurial learning (extracted in an orthogonal factor analysis based on twelve working conditions as proxy for entrepreneurial human capital and work experience) and firm size when predicting the probability of leaving paid employment for self-employment. We think, that this is a special kind of knowledge spillover. We also control for other aspects such as gender, age, wage, etc. – factors that may potentially influence the decision to become self-employed. Thus, our analysis sheds new light onto the black box of SMEs as a hotbed of new start-ups.Entrepreneurship, Occupational Choice, Working Conditions, Human Capital

In order to resolve the relationships of Lacerta kulzeri, parts of mitochondrial genes for 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA of samples of the following species were sequenced: Gallotia stehlini (as an outgroup), Lacerta trilineata, L. cappadocica, L. fraasii, L. danfordi, L. rudis, Podarcis peloponnesiaca, as well as representatives of different populations of L. laevis and L. kulzeri. Sequence analysis clearly shows a close relation between L. laevis and L. kulzeri and no close relation of these species to any other representative of the lizards examined. The other species also show themselves to be representatives of very distinct lacertid groups. The resulting sequence differences within L. kulzeri and L. laevis, respectively, are very high in relation to those between the two species, and they are higher than one would expect for species with small areas. Analiza sekvenci jasno pokazuje blisku vezu L. laevis i L. kulzeri, a nikakvu blisku vezu tih vrsta s ostalim ispitanim vrstama guštera.

All seven lacertid species recorded in the Peloponnese can be found in a very small area in the Arcadian highlands on the Peloponnese peninsula. Only one example of such unique diversity in such a small area has been described in the Mediterranean region before. This density requires the occupation of different restricted ecological and ethological niches by all seven species and therefore the habitats have to be diverse. Niche segregation, ecological demands and the ethological differences between the species are discussed in relation to this habitat diversity.

Envisioning Unity: The Media Discourse in South Korea and Germany on National Unity. A Longitudinal Study on Emerging Transnational Public Spheres

    Get PDF
Using the example of the discourse on national unity in Germany and South Korea, this article examines the formation of transnational public spheres along long-wave political issues. It explores to what extent a similar political challenge of two states is conducive to the formation of a transnational public sphere. The findings of a qualitative analysis of frames in the reporting of South Korean and West German leading media on the process of German unification from 1989 to 1991 as well as the initiatives of South Korean President Moon Jae-In for peace and unification on the Korean peninsula in 2018 and 2019 are discussed. The study reveals indications for the emergence of a trans-national public sphere with regard to all important indicators. However, this appears to be fragile and strongly driven by the fall of the Berlin Wall as a key event with global impact

Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen: gefördert und frühvollendet. Zwischen Poesie und totem Zoo

    Get PDF
Summary Franz Ferdinand Julius Meyen (1804–1840) has published important results in several fields of biology, especially botany and zoology. By support of Alexander von Humboldt Meyen got the chance to accompany the expedition on the vessel „Princess Louise“ as a medical doctor. Alexander von Humboldt, who had visited many years before some of the areas gave him assistance during the preparation for the journey. Meyen published his results shortly after his return in a so called „historical report” on his travel what was published in two parts as well as in special articles. Some of his results he handed over to specialists, some of it has been reported post mortem by members of the Academy Leopoldina. Meyen brought an impressive collection of prepared birds to Berlin, including the type specimen of Spheniscus humboldtii (so called Humboldt-penguin)
